To Our Teachers

Somewhere, a grown woman still says her prayers the way you taught her. Somewhere there is a man who walked back into a church after twenty years away, and the reason he walked in was that once, when he was seven, someone was glad to see him on a Sunday morning.

You will probably never meet them. That is the strange arithmetic of this work. You give an hour a week to children who cannot thank you, you prepare lessons no one watches you prepare, and the results arrive decades later, in lives you will not be there to see. On a difficult Sunday, it can feel like very little is happening at all.

But this is how the faith has always come down to us. Not chiefly through councils and books, but through people who kept showing up: mothers and grandmothers, deacons and teachers, ordinary faithful who loved the children in front of them and trusted God with the rest. Our Church has survived centuries this way. It survives now because of you.

So when the lesson falls apart, when half the class is restless, and the other half is somewhere else entirely, remember what you are actually doing. You are handing a child something she will carry her whole life. She may not know it yet. Neither will you. But it is happening.
